no zoo can replicate the family support structure that elephants have developed. it is hubris to think that preservation means captive breeding. preserve their habitat and leave them alone. and may they continue and thrive!

Karif, I agree that preserving elephants' natural habitats is crucial. Zoos cannot replicate the intricate family structures that elephants have developed over millennia. By focusing on habitat preservation, we can allow these magnificent creatures to thrive in the wild. Your insights are invaluable, and I appreciate your passion for animal welfare. Together, we can work towards a future where elephants and other species can live freely and naturally.

We have finally realized that keeping elephants in captive breeding programs and also zoos, is causing them to die at an extraordinary rate. It's always disgusted me that this happens, why can't we just transfer them to sanctuaries where they should be?

My sentiments, as well.

Wonderful article Ed. In our efforts as a collective who care deeply for all creatures with whom we share this planet, mistakes are made but learning different methods by which to save species under threat in the wild, is what all animal protectors strive to attain.

My husband was is an engineer and worked in Bangkok with his employer. He had the opportunity to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chang Mai. It left him with wonder and a full heart.

I hope a positive solution will be found collectively.

It just breaks my heart we cannot let animals “be” in their natural habitats. I know that is a pollyanna way of looking at things and not reality but if we learn more and change what we are doing for species protection and enhancement, what a wonderful thing.

My last comment. The changes in animal welfare and understanding of what our most precious creatures require has changed for the positive since I rescued my first cat at the age of four. I am now 77 and seen such positive change but more needs to be done.

Thanks Ed. Great article!

Thank you, Elizabeth! I'm glad you found the article meaningful. It's inspiring to hear about your husband's experience at the sanctuary in Chiang Mai. These sanctuaries offer hope and a glimpse into what compassionate care can look like. I share your sentiment that while we've made progress, there's always more to be done. Together, by learning and adapting, we can strive for a world where all creatures thrive. Thank you for your kind words and support!

Heartbreaking for sure. I can't imagine the grief the veterinarians and staff feel for the loss.

Zoos might as well be slaughter houses, pet projects for the rich.
