Ed, Greatly appreciate your comprehensive coverage addressing key issues with SDHS. From what I understand, those in San Diego County closely involved in seeking transparency and accountability will agree.

The illustration of selling ice to an Eskimo hilariously PERFECT! Cheers

So the CEO of SDHS finally responded to months of public outcry, whistleblower claims, and a Grand Jury report… and what did we get? A glorified Yelp review of himself.

Meanwhile, the Grand Jury says SDHS is failing its contract, not responding to calls, and basically ghosting leash law violations across 300 square miles.

Oh and apparently their humane law enforcement guy lives in Sacramento. Because when you’re managing public safety in San Diego, it’s important to be a solid 500 miles away. This isn’t leadership, it’s theater!

This is the second Grand Jury report criticizing SDHS's performance. The previous year, the Grand Jury looked into dog bites and the response to dangerous dogs. One of their recommendations was to enforce leash laws. Looks like SDHS decided to do nothing to improve public safety over the past year...

Better yet the initial job announcement listed one of the requirements as having a bachelors degree. Many qualified people with a degree applied yet he chose someone who didn’t meet the basic requirements and lives in an entirely different region of the state. I guess when you lie as much as Gary does, one starts to believe their own lies. I agree total theater.

I got through about 1/3 of Gary’s responses and could not take reading anymore of the nonsense. He preaches mutual respect, transparency, and trust but could not turn over records to a city attorney and his VP of communication and philanthropy had the gull to set up a meeting with me and try to admonish me like they do their volunteers and employees. Brian could not answer a single question I asked without getting defensive and did not like it when I told him I would not let him admonished. Like a cry baby, he ended the call. They have been anything but transparent during the entire 318 situation and have lied their way through it. I called it on September 1 when I stated to Christian Gonzalez that he would be the sole person thrown under the bus for the entire situation. I will give SDHS one thing, they sure as hell can cover up crimes and come out the shining star in public perception. Of course this helps when you spend $3.6 million on PR and advertising.

Great article. I'm really frustrated by the media's portrayal of SDHS. The San Diego Union Tribune does publish letters to the editor from animal activists, but their articles are all fawning and contain untruths and misinformation. The biggest one is that they never turn away an animal in need. There's a group of women in San Diego that catch domestic rabbits people dump in parks. The new wranglers are told not to call SDHS. but to show up with the stray rabbits and not to take "no" for an answer. If they call first, they are told not to bring the rabbit to the shelter. Certainly a domestic rabbit left in a park is an animal in need.

They initially told the lady with 96 guinea pigs they would not take them. Papa John's offers up $2,700 for surrender fees and Gary gets called out and suddenly they agree to take them. The mainstream media who are no less influenced by advertising $ makes it appear they lovingly accepted them all, just like the guinea pigs they knowing let live in a hoarders RV for over a year and was forced to take them when they guy died. They made themselves out to be heros then too yet they killed many by trying to spay and neuter malnourished and pregnant guinea pigs.
