What a horrible tragedy from war….and as a sidenote, not related to this situation specifically, I find it sad when I learn of countries who know there will be negative environment impacts but they still support certain dams projects. 😔

You make an astute point, Yvonne. Dams can have significant negative environmental impacts, such as disrupting natural river flows, harming both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

I sincerely hope the ICC agrees to hear this case of deliberate ecocide; it is unthinkable even in war time that humans could do anything so outrageous. Time for Putin to pay up vast sums of money, be imprisoned or more. Sent to one of his own gulags would be a perfect solution for life as long as he can survive there. It has imperial Russian hideous remnants in the permafrost, a perfect home for the man who will not be human in any form or fashion. The risk to the nuclear plant, the biggest in the world lingers. I pray it resists catastrophic consequences. Ukraine can tolerate little more. Entire generations fight on for peace. We must do all we can to help them from the USA and EU and worldwide.

Thank you, Judith, for sharing your thoughts on this critical issue. I appreciate your support for holding those responsible accountable.

The situation is dire, and the potential long-term impacts on both the environment and human lives are profound. The ICC is currently investigating this incident, and there is a strong push for recognizing ecocide as an international crime. This could pave the way for holding those responsible accountable for their actions.

Thank you for your engagement and for standing with Ukraine during these challenging times.

Once again, evidence that war is a stupid way to solve disagreements!

This is an ecological disaster, Ed. And whomever is responsible needs to be held accountable. Sonething else also caught my eye in your fine article; you wrote this:

"The release of hazardous chemicals from manufacturing plants downstream has increased the risk of waterborne diseases, including cholera and diarrhea."

Has Ukraine allowed industrial plants to dump hazardous and toxic waste into their waterways? If so, they need to do better.

Perry, you raise an important point which does need to be clarified. According to Ukrainian authorities and environmental experts, the primary responsibility for this catastrophe lies with the actions of the invading forces, not with Ukraine's environmental regulations or practices. In this instance, it was the dam's destruction that caused widespread flooding, which in turn released pollutants that were previously contained. The unprecedented scale of the disaster and the ongoing conflict have created a situation where the environmental damage is largely a result of the war and the specific act of destroying the dam.

Ok; thanks for the clarification.
