Excellent summation of the problem with LAAS shelters and what needs to be done. If the companion animal loving community become more aware of this they could actively canvas their local administrations to find more money and to tailor support for every individual animal with far better care in the future.
Thank you, Arjun, for your feedback. I agree, this paradigm shift has to be explained to both the public and the city decision makers. Without this understanding I don't see how the situation will ever improve.
Agree, we need to move away from the one size fits all, because anyone who spends any amount of time in a animal shelter, who truly cares about these animals can see that that does not work. These are living, breathing, feeling creatures all created differently with different needs. They are not a statistic!! Stick your numbers where the sun doesn't shine and do things for these animals based on what is best for the animal.
Excellent read. Unless municipal ac agencies start to put blame and responsibility on the people who continue to contribute to the problem, we won’t adopt or spay neuter our way out of this. Back yard breeding is out of control in LA and the system is so understaffed that they can’t stop this. This isn’t about telling people “adopt don’t shop!” It is about placing the blame on those dumping dogs and not caring for the dogs they have.
Thank you, Robert, for your thoughtful feedback. You raise an important point about the need for accountability and addressing the root causes of the problem. Tackling issues like backyard breeding and ensuring responsible pet ownership are crucial steps in making a lasting impact. It's a complex challenge, but I'm hoping that with community awareness and support, we can work towards meaningful solutions.
There is a desperate plea from a street rescuer named Ronnie, who rescues dogs from the homeless and streets. She has a litter of puppies and a $1200 pledge to any rescue that can step up. Can anyone help? Please. She works tirelessly on the streets and asks for nothing but help in fostering these animals. Please reach out to me, PatLukes@aol.com. If you know of any rescue that can help thank you.
