I think the message is out there, and folks are getting pets - if only for a while. In an aging society, we would hope that people over 65 getting a pet would 1) opt for a senior pet and 2) make provision for the re-homing of the pet when the adopter goes into a nursing home or hospital or dies. This happens more than people realize and the pet (especially cats) end up on the streets or turned away from an overcrowded shelter.

Thank you, Elaine—such an important point. Senior pets and senior adopters can be a perfect match, but planning for the pet’s future is essential. I appreciate you highlighting this often-overlooked issue.
